I'm not sure whether it is a cultural "thingy", but over here in Ollanda we use descriptions like: "the GPS" "the GPS unit" "the GPS receiver" Is that the sort of thing that you're refering to? Calling it a 'thingy' is just a bit of a joke... Not sure how good your knowledge of English is (it seems pretty good) but just in case you didn't know, a 'thingy' is a jokey slang word that you can use to refer to an object when you're not sure what it's really called.
